Picture the River

In the fall of 2002, 15 advanced photography students signed up for a one-time Mass Communication course called Picture the River and took on the task of researching river topics and photographing river subjects for what became an exhibit by the same name.

Each student chose some aspect of the river she or he wanted to photograph, and they all soon began making photographs, both digital and on film. Nikki Mossing took her kayak into the backwaters around Fountain City, Wisconsin, to see the progression of the fall season there; Scott Haraldson decided to photograph the world of big river barges; Teresa Hackler documented the small town of Genoa, Wisconsin, and Beth Renner was attracted by the abstract quality of the water itself.

Through critiques during the semester and intensive darkroom and computer sessions, the thousands of photographs taken by the group were winnowed down to individual portfolios of 20-25, and then, guest curator, photographer and University of WisconsinóLa Crosse professor Roger Grant, selected 45 prints for a traveling show.

With donations from within and without the university, we built shipping crates, matted and framed the images and arranged a two-year tour.

The show opened at Winona State in the fall of 2003 and then hung in several galleries and museums from St. Paul to Saint Louis.

The student photographers were: Seamus Boyle, Jenny Butler, Beth Carlson, Ty Ganglehoff, Lyndsey Hafner, Teresa Hackler, Scott Haraldson, Meghann Miller, Sara Moe, Nikki Mossing, Kim O'Donnell, Beth Renner, Megan Robinson, Sarah Natrop, and Dana Shearer. The class was taught by Drake Hokanson, professor in the Mass Communication Department.
